IS LOW BACK PAIN NORMAL?
Many people experience low back pain, with studies suggesting that more than 80% of people will experience low back pain at some point. This article will explain the reason it happens and whether this is normal or not.
What is it?
Low back pain is discomfort affecting the small of your back and almost exclusively originates from the spine. The spinal nerves at the bottom of the back (n area called the lumbar spine), sends information to the skin, muscles, ligaments and everything else in the low back, groin, legs, ankles and feet. Even though it’s a relatively small part of the body it passes information to almost half our body so it’s important to keep it healthy.
How does it get damaged?
Problems in the low back can start in many ways.
They can originate at birth due to a traumatic birth
There can be misalignments at the first bone in the spine, putting the balance off for our whole spine
Trauma in our lives, such as falls, car crashes and sports injuries
Poor posture
Heavy lifting
Emotional factors, these cloud our brain and body’s functioning preventing us from healing efficiently
What happens to the bones and discs with these types of injuries?
If the pressure on the spine increases then the body will change the shape of the bone over time; this is known as degeneration, or wear and tear. This is a great way our body cares for us, changing the shape of the bones to prevent fractures or bigger problems that could occur. Even though it causes pain this is still an example of our bodies regulating and keeping us safe. The discs are the shock absorbers of the spine and take a lot of the pressure, but over time they can get thinner and start to bulge, putting pressure on our nerves. This is what is known as a slipped disc, this is explained in full in another article.
Just because back pain is common it DOESN’T mean it is normal.
How can Chiropractic help?
As a Chiropractor, I am not content with the idea that back pain is a normal part of life. I persevere to find the cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms. This involves a detailed history to discover how and why it started, followed by a physical examination and if you’re a candidate for Chiropractic then we can start adjustments.
