I am a reporter for a nationally syndicated real estate section published weekly in newspapers across the country. I’m looking to interview real estate agents, brokers, lenders, attorneys, homeowners association leaders/members, and other housing experts for the following story:
FIVE COMMON HOA ASSESSMENT HEADACHES TO AVOID. This story would explore the common problems/challenges related to homeowners association (HOA) assessments that owners at places like townhomes and condos should be aware of, and what they can do about them. Below is a list of questions I’m seeking answers to for this story. Please e-mail me back your interest, availability and phone number. My deadline is noon central time, Wednesday, May 14.
1. What are some common assessments charged by HOAs, what are the typical charges (give an example if possible), and what do they cover?
2. When it comes to HOA assessments, what are some of the biggest headaches/problems faced by these associations and the homeowners they serve? (e.g., not charging enough, not keeping up with long-term repairs, etc. Try to list 5 problems if possible).
3. What can/should HOAs be doing to avoid these problems?
4. What should homeowners be doing to make sure their HOA resolves these problems? What options/recourse do they have? What are some important things to consider before buying a home/unit that’s part of a homeowner’s association?
5. What are some of the typical rules/bylaws that you can expect from one of these associations?
6. Do these homeowner’s associations get an unfair bad reputation? Or are many of them deserved?
7. What tips do you have on dealing with a strict/difficult homeowner’s association?
8. Any other thoughts, tips, suggestions on this topic that I failed to ask about?
9. What is your full name, title, company, and location where you are based?
