I am a reporter for a nationally syndicated real estate section published weekly in newspapers across the country. I’m looking to interview real estate agents, brokers, lenders, mortgage experts, property attorneys and other housing experts for the following article:
TAKING THE RENT-OUT-YOUR-RESIDENCE ROUTE. Thinking about renting out your vacant or occupied home to a long- or short-term tenant and creating an extra revenue stream? This article would cover important factors to consider, who a good landlord candidate is, what needs to be done to the property first, preparing to deal with tenants, and include suggestions from professionals. Below is a list of questions I’m seeking answers to for this story. Please e-mail me back your interest, availability and phone number. My deadline is noon central time, Friday, Sept. 19.
1. Why should homeowners consider leasing out their home to a short- or long-term tenant today? What are the advantages/disadvantages?
2. What types of homeowners and properties are the best candidates to be landlords and rental properties, respectively, and why?
3. What do homeowners need to consider carefully before going the rent-out-your-home route? What recommendations do you have here (dos/don’ts)?
4. What do homeowners need to do to prepare their properties for renters? What modifications/preparations are necessary, and do they need to get permission from their municipality/local authorities?
5. What terms should be included within the lease to protect the homeowner/landlord, and why?
6. Should homeowners consider using sites like Airbnb, HomeAway, and VRBO to promote their rental properties and find short-term tenants? Any other services/sites you’d recommend them to check out/use, and why?
7. Can you relate a personal example that underscores this topic/trend from your experience (e.g., a client who leased out their home successfully)?
8. Any other thoughts, tips, suggestions on this topic that I failed to ask about?
9. What is your full name, title, company, and location where you are based?
