I am a reporter for a nationally syndicated real estate section published weekly in newspapers across the country. I’m looking to interview real estate, tax, and remodeling experts for the following article:
STORY: TAX FACTS FOR HOMEOWNERS: HOW TO MAX OUT ON YOUR TAX BREAKS/DEDUCTIONS IF YOU OWN A HOME.
For this story, I’m seeking to interview tax professionals and real estate experts. Below is a list of questions I’m seeking answers to. I can either conduct a phone or email interview (with the latter, please email me back full-sentence written responses that I can use as quotes). My deadline is noon central time, Friday, March 6, 2015.
QUESTIONS:
1. This tax season, what are some of the key tax breaks/deductions that homeowners can claim on their 2014 tax returns, especially items that ONLY homeowners are eligible to claim? Please specify what these deductions/write-offs are and what they are worth (min/max).
2. Are there any new ones this year that weren’t available previously that homeowners solely can qualify for? Are there any past ones that are no longer available in 2015?
3. Is it complicated and difficult for homeowners to qualify for homeownership tax breaks and to also determine which tax breaks they’re eligible for?
4. Does finding, qualifying for, and claiming these homeownership tax breaks require enlisting the help of an outside tax expert to maximize your deductions, or can most homeowners prepare their own tax returns and find/claim these deductions themselves?
5. What can/should homeowners be doing throughout the rest of this year to make sure they qualify/claim deductions a year from now when they prepare their 2015 tax return, especially if they missed an opportunity to do so last year?
6. Do you expect any new tax breaks to be introduced next year or in the future that should excite homeowners? Do you expect any existing homeownership tax breaks to disappear next year or in the near future?
7. Any other tips, suggestions or recommendations for homeowners to maximize their tax savings now or in the future?
8. What is your full name, title, company, city/state location, and email address?
