I'm working on a new story for The Costco Connection (the consumer magazine for members of Costco stores) on the following topic:
CULTURE CLUB: the perks and pleasures of creating organic, fresh, homemade yogurt. This article would explore the benefits of eating fresh yogurt, and why making it yourself can be a fun and healthful practice. For this story, I’m looking to interview consumers who make and consume their own fresh yogurt as well as nutritionists and industry experts who are familiar with this process of making your own yogurt. I can either conduct a phone or email interview (with the latter, you can type up responses to my questions below and email them to me). My deadline to complete all interviews is Thursday, October 1 by noon central time.
QUESTIONS:
1. (FOR CONSUMERS): why do you make your own yogurt, what ingredients and equipment do you use, and how long have you been doing it? How long does it take you to make a batch, and how long does it last (before it spoils/expires)? What inspired you to make your own yogurt? What advice would you give to other consumers who may want to make their own yogurt, too – what equipment will they need, supplies, ingredients, and education? What is your full name, and city and state location? Are you a Costco member, and if so, for how many years?
2. (FOR NUTRITIONISTS AND INDUSTRY EXPERTS): Explain for beginners the benefits of making your own fresh yogurt. Why should consumers consider this practice?
3. What is required to make your own yogurt? Please name the ingredients, equipment/supplies needed, and know how required. Where can these ingredients and equipment be purchased?
4. What features should the yogurt-making device include and why? How much will this cost (price for the initial equipment/supplies, and price per batch going forward)? Can homemade yogurt be made without a yogurt-making device that needs to be purchased?
5. What different types of yogurt (Greek, traditional, etc.) can a consumer make at home with the right equipment/supplies? Which type is the most nutritious and which type is the easiest to make? How can a plain yogurt be livened up/flavored to entice the taste buds? Can you provide a simple recipe for a tasty homemade yogurt here (include all the list of ingredients and steps required, assuming the consumer is using a yogurt-making appliance)?
6. Is making frozen homemade yogurt a different process than making traditional refrigerated homemade yogurt, or can the latter simply be put in the freezer for a frozen dessert treat?
7. What are the risks or disadvantages of making your own yogurt? What safety precautions do consumers need to follow carefully?
8. What tips would you suggest to consumers before investing in this hobby, as well as tips they should follow once they have purchased all the necessaries?
9. Any other thoughts, comments, or tips you wanted to offer on this topic?
10. What is your full name, title/company (if you’re a business), and city/state location?
11. Are you a Costco member (not required), and if so, for how many years?
