I'm working on a new story for Canadian version of The Costco Connection (the consumer magazine for members of Costco stores) on the following topic:
GET “GARRANGED”: HOW TO ARRANGE AND ORGANIZE YOUR GARAGE WITH SPACE-SAVING GARAGE STORAGE SYSTEMS, SPECIAL FLOORING TILES/MATS, AND ADJACENT SHEDS
For this story, I’m looking to interview Canadian manufacturers, contractors/installers, and experts in this field as well as a couple of Canadian homeowners who have purchased/installed garage organization products for their homes. Due to a recent surgery, my ability to talk is limited so I prefer to conduct an email interview, if possible (whereby you can type up responses to my questions below and email them to me). My deadline to complete all interviews is Thursday, May 28 at noon central time. Again, you must live/work in Canada to be included in my article.
QUESTIONS:
1. (This question is for a Canadian homeowner only): What type of garage storage/organization system or kit did you install in your garage, when, and why? What were your goals in purchasing these products, what was your budget, and how has your more spatially efficient garage benefitted you and proved to be a worthy investment? What tips would you provide to readers before they invest in a system/kit? What is your full name, age, and city/state location? Are you a Costco member, and if so how many years?
2. (The remaining questions are for experts): Why is arranging and organizing a home garage worth the money and effort? What are the benefits/advantages of doing so?
3. Do you have any statistics/research findings that underscore how popular garage organization systems/projects have become for homeowners in Canada that you can share?
4. What are some popular types of organization/storage systems and kits sold today that homeowners can either install themselves or pay a professional to install in their garages? Please categorize the different types/options out there. If you are a manufacturer, please provide the following details on one or two of your products: features, dimensions, costs, level of difficulty in installing, etc.
5. If they don’t buy an all-in-one system or kit, what separate components should homeowners consider buying collectively that can accomplish the goal of better spatial efficiency/organization in a garage?
6. What optional accessories should homeowners consider in addition to an organization/storage system or kit, and why? (e.g., standalone storage sheds, pegboards, shelves, mats/flooring, cabinets, hooks/clips, etc.)
7. How do you recommend that a homeowner match the right storage/organization products to their garage space and budget? What criteria should they be considering both now and for future garage needs and why?
8. Should homeowners carefully measure their garage space and if so, how and why? What is the minimum space a homeowner needs to accommodate a storage system?
9. What tips can you provide homeowners so that they maximize spatial efficiency in their garage whether they choose a storage system/kit or not? Any tips regarding things like minimum clearance between parked cars and storage items, what to store near outlets and away from windows, why you should consider building a loft or overhead storage area, etc.?
10. When is it best to hire a professional to install these products? How do you recommend they find the right professional for this job?
11. When is it best to attempt to do it yourself? What minimum tools and time will be required to install a garage organization/storage system (perhaps provide 2-3 different examples)?
12. Can you suggest what doing a project like this will cost at minimum, so readers can generally plan a budget (perhaps suggest 3 different project levels: basic, intermediate, and elaborate)?
13. Any other thoughts, comments, or tips you wanted to offer on this topic?
