Children’s book on dementia tells the bittersweet story of a granddaughter’s bittersweet, changing relationship with her adored grandmother.
With the increasing numbers of people diagnosed with Alzheimer's and other dementia conditions, more families and children will experience the sadness and challenges of this disease in a beloved relative or friend.
Families may assume that children do not notice when something is wrong with a beloved family member or friend suffering from Alzheimer's.
Parents may be unsure how to explain this disease or the deterioration.
The reality is that children are very observant and they worry when a loved one’s behavior changes or disappears from their lives.
"When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia" seeks to address those concerns by sensitively exploring the changing relationship between a granddaughter and her adored Grammy who has dementia.
The story is inspired by the author’s own family, which was forced to confront the pain of a no-upside, ultimately progressive disease in their beloved mother and grandmother.
Dementia is an adult topic but this book is written in a simple, straightforward manner that children can understand.
"When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia" raises awareness and helps families better understand and discuss this debilitating disease.
