Professor Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin is a leading authority in Irish traditional music, history, memory and diaspora research.
Fluent in French, Irish and English, Dr. Ó hAllmhuráin has been featured on GlobalNews Canada; RCI: Radio Canada International, CBC (Canada), RTE (Ireland), TG4 (Ireland), BBC (UK), Vox TV (Canada), PBS (USA) and TF1 (France). He has consulted on various award-winning documentaries on Irish cultural history, including the 1998 Disney/PBS mini series The Irish in America: Long Journey Home, and Photos to Send: Retracing Dorothea Lange’s Travels through Ireland, an award winning documentary on the American photographer’s visit to Ireland in 1955.
His 2016 book with Oxford University Press is entitled 'Flowing Tides– History and Memory in an Irish Soundscape' It takes the reader on a fascinating journey across 200 years of music in County Clare. Explore the historical events–from the Napoleon Wars to the modern Celtic Tiger era, the ‘cultural currents’, and musical characters that shaped the beloved traditional music of County Clare.
Since 2009, Ó hAllmhuráin has held The Johnson Chair in Québec and Canadian Irish Studies in The School of Irish Studies at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec.
A 5-time All Ireland Champion uilleann piper and concertina player, he has presented over 1,000 concerts on 4 continents during the past 30 years. He is currently producer of The Clare Tracin’ Ensemble and a former member of Ireland’s legendary Kilfenora Céilí Band.
