Gunnar Martz is an attorney at BraunHagey & Borden. His practice focuses on bringing impact litigation in state and federal courts to help underserved causes and to make broad legal change. Gunnar maintains an active docket of pro bono cases and has substantial experience with electronic discovery.
Prior to joining BHB, Gunnar focused on complex commercial and intellectual property litigation. He also represented corporate and individual clients in potential criminal and civil investigations as an associate at a national litigation firm, where he worked on numerous pro bono matters. There, he achieved significant victories for his clients, including obtaining asylum for a Honduran human rights activist and campesino who faced severe persecution by landowners and soldiers; securing a favorable arbitration award for the recipient of a U.S. SBA loan specifically designated to assist women entrepreneurs; and representing the accused in partnership with the Marin County Public Defender’s Office. He began his career representing financial institutions and corporations in securities disputes related to the financial crisis.
At Cornell Law School, he was an editor on the Cornell Law Review, a research assistant in property law for Gregory S. Alexander, and twice received honorable mentions as the best individual oralist while competing at the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot held annually in Vienna. Northern California Super Lawyers® has selected Gunnar as a “Rising Star” in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society composed of less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers.
