Mystery author set to explain his craft over dinner
Valley News Dispatch February 2011

The meal isn't a mystery, but the discussion will be, at the first author dinner debuting Wednesday at Ladles Restaurant in Arnold. "Dinner & an Evening of Mystery With an Author" presents an opportunity to get behind the plot lines and characters of Brackenridge mystery writer Bill Davis, whose work is penned under the name of C. William Davis III. It's "an adventure into mystery" for all readers, aspiring writers and anyone just looking for a relaxing night out, says Ladles owner and head chef Kathy Kaminski of Lower Burrell.
"I know this is going to be a great event to maybe inspire readers about what goes into writing a book, and maybe encourage occasional readers like me to set aside some time to read and de- stress," she says. There's nothing like "falling away into the fantasy of storytelling," she says. "I think mysteries let people fantasize about possible endings and bring out their inner detective."
Kaminski met Davis and his wife, Linda, one Sunday morning when the couple was having breakfast. Learning that he became an author after he retired, she thought others might be interested in an evening talking about books and following dreams. "I am always intrigued by people who have the initiative and gumption to use their talent and follow their dreams," Kaminsky says. "I'd love to do more of these events." So would Davis. "We love to introduce our readers and listeners to things that are new and interesting," he says. "I always look forward to the question and answer period after our programs. I think the dinner just sets the mood."
After the meal, Davis will talk about his recently completed trilogy, which concluded with "The Ticket Master (Return of the The Forever Man)." It began with "The Forever Man," which introduced Southwestern Pennsylvania Sheriff Clive Aliston on the trail of a serial killer. The story continued with "Tail of the Scorpion." He will discuss how he finally embraced writing, current projects and will read from his yet-unpublished work, "Thoughts, Dreams and Fantasies of an Ordinary Man," stories, poems and observations about people, places and events that impacted his life.
Davis also will read "Come Talk with Us Awhile," his reflection on those aboard Flight 93 during the events of 9/11. He is working on "Whispers, Echoes and Wisps of the Wind," a book of short stories. He and his wife are in the early stages of co-authoring a love story-thriller set in the Allegheny National Forest. "I am a writer who will help anyone interested in this field," he says. "There is a lot of great talent out there, and sometimes all they need is a helping hand or just the right encouragement." He believes the mystery genre always will be alive.
"Mysteries will never die as long as there are people left on this planet. I think we are born into mystery. Each day of our lives, start to finish is about mystery," Davis says.
