Body Benevolence: Family Mealtime Conversation Starters
Studies show that families that gather together at meal time are healthier, more connected and better adjusted. What a great way to encourage a lifetime of Body Benevolence™! Encourage your family members to eat together by engaging in good conversation over dinner.
Here are six conversation ideas to keep your family meals fun and engaging:
1.) Set the intention for your family meals to be about enjoyment and sharing. This is not the time to address problems or complicated issues (schedule family meetings for that.) Parents, don’t attempt to control the conversation, instead encourage open dialogue with your children.
2) Use dinner time to talk about your goals and dreams, wishes and fantasies. Start the conversation with the question, “If you could wave a magic wand…”
3.) Share a gratitude with one another for one another. Or, a simple gratitude about something else.
4.) Create dinner time themes, for example, “Julia Child Night” where everyone is encouraged to speak with a Julia Child accent.
5.) Allow your children to invite a guest from time to time. Allow your guest to share something exciting about themselves or their family.
6.) Growing up in a family of four girls, we used an egg timer to give us each a chance to speak at the table. We passed it around and everyone had to listen to us without interruption until the egg timer went off. It was actually fun and we all laugh about to this day.
