If there is anyone who certainly knows how to speak sports lingo with the very best of them, it’s Suzy Beamer Bohnert. The proof is in the books the Game-Day Goddess has written.
For the third time, the Arlington resident, a 1979 graduate of Yorktown High School, has written a self-help book about how to understand the lingo of a particular game or sport.
Her latest is “Game-Day Goddess: Learning Baseball’s Lingo.” It will be released in February or March. Her past two books in the Game-Day Goddess Sports Series were about learning basketball and football lingo. Beamer Bohnert has also written a children’s book titled “Binkie Learns to Fly.” It was written to help her son overcome a fear of the water.
The lingo in her books documents the action seen on television or heard on the radio, or in the stands, and the essentials of the game.
On Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m., Beamer Bohnert will hold a book signing to benefit breast-cancer research by selling autographed copies of her basketball book at the South Lakes High School girls’ varsity basketball game.
Book-sale proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help in its search to find a cure for breast cancer. Each book sells for $13. The book signing will take place in the South Lakes gym. It was set up with the help of Beamer Bohnert’s former roommate, who is a breast-cancer survivor.
Beamer Bohnert is a sports lover with a vast knowledge of sports on all levels. She was once a sports stringer for the old “Northern Virginia Sun” and a sports editor of a newspaper in Falls Church.
In addition, the mother of two was a three-sport athlete at Yorktown and currently coaches a variety of different sports on a year-round basis.
“I have always loved sports,” the Virginia Tech graduate said. “Our parents encouraged us to play sports. Now, I have translated my love for sports into writing about sports. I really enjoy it.”
Her sports books are targeted toward women and have been well received. But men purchase the books as well.
“Don’t be embarrassed by the title,” she said. “You can be a Sports God as well. You can become well-versed and speak the lingo.”
Beamer Bohnert’s next project will be a series of sports books geared toward kids about basketball, baseball, and football. The books will include illustrations and easy-to-read language.
“Sports are a great way to get physically active for everyone,” Beamer Bohnert said.
Beamer Bohnert’s books are published by B&B Publishing in Arlington. They can be purchased online at Amazon.com (www.amazon.com), Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com), and at all booksellers. Her Web site is mysite.verizon.net/suzybohnert.
