January Spotlight on Suzy Beamer Bohnert and Game-Day Youth: Learning Baseball's Lingo
If you have kids, they probably play sports...maybe even sports you knew little about or didn't play as a kid yourself. They're curious about the sport so they ask you questions; as a caring parent you want to help them pursue their passion with as much know-how and confidence as possible.
Suzy Beamer Bohnert knows your story. She's living it as a mom to two kids active in several sports and interested in even more! Her "aha" moment for the Game-Day Youth Sports Series for kids came when she was trying to answer some of the questions her kids had...and to understand what she was watching herself.
Please welcome Suzy Beamer Bohnert to the Alumni Spotlight.
MCA: Happy New Year and welcome to the spotlight Suzy! Can you please tell us about what motivated you to write Game-Day Youth: Learning Baseball's Lingo?
Suzy: I am the parent of two kids who are actively involved in sports. Between the kids - one is nine, the other is 5 - they play soccer, basketball, and baseball. On top of that, they are interested in football and other sports.
They not only want to actively participate, but they want to be knowledgeable about how to play the sports: What are the rules? What are the right terms? That's where my idea for Game-Day Youth: Learning Baseball's Lingo came from. The book lets youth know more about baseball, so when they go to practice, play in a game, or hear the game on radio or TV, they're informed about what's happening.
I also have a series of sports books for parents that discuss football, basketball, and baseball on an adult level. The Game-Day Goddess Sports Series and the Game-Day Youth Sports Series are for beginners or those with a sophisticated knowledge of the game.
MCA: Now that you have an award-winning product, what are your goals for the next year?
Suzy: Getting kids active in physical activity is important to their well-being. Exercise is a fundamental part of life, and sports can be an important part of that physical regimen.
Because Game-Day Youth: Learning Baseball's Lingo is part of a sports series, I will continue to add titles to it. Look for Game-Day Youth: Learning Basketball's Lingo to come out in April 2011, That will be followed by Game-Day Youth: Learning Football's Lingo.
With each of my books, I hope boys and girls will read them to learn more about sports that millions play each year in schoolyards, backyards, and in organized leagues. Knowing what's happening; where the players play; what the field or court looks like and what its parts are; as well as understanding the language of the game makes various team sports fantastic and fun.
MCA: Please name three ways your Mom's Choice Award® will help you attain your goals.
Suzy: As a Mom's Choice Award-winning author, B&B Publishing and me personally have gained additional credibility. Companies, industry representatives, associations, schools, and libraries take notice because they know that you are an author with a publisher that believes in bringing a quality product to market worthy of consumers' time.
In our outreach, we continue to show the importance of family-friendly books and the value they hold with guys, gals, and youths. Books are a wonderful resource for people to learn, and they have great merit in marketing, educational, and promotional programs.
MCA: Can you share with us what you learned about yourself as an artist/writer/entrepreneur in creating your award-winning product?
Suzy: Writing a book is not unlike giving birth to a child. You work hard to do the right things before you deliver a product to the public, and then, once the book is for the world to see, you nurture the book, giving it loving care by promoting it properly and seeing it from infancy to adulthood.
From this writing process, and from being a mother to two children, I've learned that creating something worthy of sharing is beautiful.
MCA: Since launching your book, what has
