Kindle Author Interview: Suzy Beamer Bohnert

Suzy Beamer Bohnert, author of the Game-Day Goddess Sports Series, discusses her books, her journey as a writer, and publishing on Kindle.

DAVID WISEHART: What can you tell us about Game-Day Goddess?

SUZY BEAMER BOHNERT: The Game-Day Goddess Sports Series has three titles that have been named the Best Books for College Students by StudentAdvisor.com, a "Washington Post" Co. The books cover basketball, baseball, and football.

"Game-Day Goddess: Learning Baseball's Lingo" enables you to understand America's favorite pastime fully with this easy-to-read paperback. It's a wonderful gift for those who want a handy reference guide that's entertaining, funny, and informative. It's the ultimate guide for quickly learning about baseball.

"Game-Day Goddess: Learning Basketball's Lingo" is a great gift for the fan and non-fan alike to understand the fast-moving and exciting game of basketball. Follow the action with this fun guide to help you fully understand the game.

"Game-Day Goddess: Learning Football's Lingo" is an informative, humorous self-help guide for people to discover more about one of America's favorite sports. Use it as a quick reference guide to learn the language and concepts of football, while having fun and feeling inspired as you learn.

DAVID WISEHART: Who do you imagine is your ideal reader?

SUZY BEAMER BOHNERT: These books are for those who are beginners as well as those with a sophisticated knowledge of the game.

Business leaders and individuals in general will find that my "Game-Day Goddess: Learning Football's Lingo," "Game-Day Goddess: Learning Baseball's Lingo," and "Game-Day Goddess: Learning Basketball's Lingo" titles will help them to use their knowledge of sport to advance their business effectiveness and ability to make friends.

You can use the books to break the ice with a new business contact or new friends. When we interact in a social setting with others, we have the opportunity to discover common values and interests and define our sameness rather than differences. When we do this, we are much more open and comfortable socializing and doing business with each other. Sport is a common denominator, even if you like different activities. As such, it can lead to terrific conversation starters and new business.

You can use my books to be accepted as a member of the team. If you know something another person values, you create an area of perceived common interest. You are more likely to be readily accepted as a teammate. You can learn sports with my books and get quality time with your boss or customers, friends or family. In fact, it may be more important for you to engage in this non-business conversation and to find this common ground that is the basis for a successful long-term relationship than to get into a business or social conversation right away.

DAVID WISEHART: What was your journey as a writer?

SUZY BEAMER BOHNERT: I think I started having the "Weekly Reader" in third grade, and even then, I would tell people that I wanted to be an “arthur.” I couldn’t say “author”—couldn’t pronounce it—but I knew that I wanted to write, and I wanted to write about sports because I was a tomboy. I would play with all the kids in the neighborhood—especially the boys—and we would play football and baseball and basketball. Because of that I always knew that I wanted to chronicle the happenings in the sports world. I was always fascinated with sports at a young age. That was my passion, and it still is.

I started out as the sports editor for a newspaper and I haven't stopped writing about sports. I've written six books so far and will have a seventh—"Game-Day Youth: Learning Football's Lingo"—out in April 2012.

DAVID WISEHART: What is your writing process?

SUZY BEAMER BOHNERT: I write each day and conduct a great deal of research by interviewing people. That way, I really get the best facts to use in my books and I find that people open me up to new ideas and things t
