Addiction: The Eternal Trickster

06/05/2011 01:21pm
The face of addiction is a trickster. Much like the legendary stories of Coyote, Loki Crow, addiction takes on many forms.Definition of a trickster: the one given by Lewis Hyde: "trickster is a boundary-crosser" (7). By that, he means that the trickster crosses both physical and social boundaries-- the trickster is often a traveler, and he often breaks societal rules. Tricksters cross lines, breaking or blurring connections and distinctions between "right and wrong, sacred and profane, clean and dirty, male and female, young and old, living and dead" (Hyde 7). The trickster often changes shape (turning into an animal,...

Self-Publishing or Print-on-Demand?Copyright 2010 by Valerie J. Lewis ColemanWith the advent of technology, writers have numerous options when it comes to publishing. If youre blessed to get a book deal with a traditional publisher (i.e. Random House, Simon Schuster, HarperCollins), youll get an advance, royalties and a marketing allowance. Given the volatility of the book industry and emergence of e-books, landing a deal with a traditional publisher is a rare feat. Tons of vanity presses make it easy to publish a book. These companies charge tens of thousands of dollars by preying on the fact that nave authors will...

If Laughter is the Best Medicine, I'll Be Just Fine

05/27/2011 02:28pm
I dont know if laughter is the best medicine, but it is certainly good medicine. There is a lot of talk these days about positive attitude and how essential it is to coping with chronic illness. That is true, but I would add that a sense of humor may be just as important. The ability to laugh at our own foibles and missteps is sometimes just the tonic we need.I can come up with dozens of examples of multiple sclerosis imposing on my life in a frustrating way, and quite a few instances where strangers have had a laugh at my expense....

Or, in the midst of chaos (mentally and otherwise), have you lost track of why you do what you do?As I listened to Bob Green on an interview recently, he was talking about what it takes to succeed at weight loss, in order to live your best life. I couldnt help but relate his comments to what it takes to succeed...

Empowered Actively

05/25/2011 12:15pm
If youre like me, you like being in charge and control of your lifes decisions. Of course, the actuality of that control is tempered with the reality of outside forces. In many situations, its best to release any attachment and adapt to what is. Recognize, however, you do have a lot of control over what goes on with your body. Committing to the decision to take control of your health is very empowering. Key to your health is being physically active. This is especially true for that huge population segment known as the Baby Boom...

World Wide Awakening Creates A Universal World

We are in an evolutionary period, much like the Renaissance of old. Like the Renaissance, in fifteenth century Europe, we're seeing a humanistic revival. It is distinguished by vigorous activity of action that supports a transitional movement. The Millenium, or "New Age," speaks to individualty in thought, action, and behavior. Events in the Middle Ages set in motion a series of political, social, and intellectual transformations, and were the driver behind the Renaissance. Then as now, there is creative action taking place. You don't have to be a forecaster to know this is true. Your eyes and ears can tell...

Retaliated Against At Work for Doing What’s “Right?” Courts and Juries are Now on Your Side

05/24/2011 08:15pm
Important Intro Note: On May 27, 2008, the United States Supreme Court issued decisions in two related cases that raised this fundamental question: When Congress granted employees rights to fair employment practices, did Congress also mean to grant employees protections from retaliation from employers for exercising those rights? The Supreme Courts answer, to the surprise of many Court-watchers, was a resounding YES. It appears that, when it comes to the protection of fundamental, individual rights, very conservative and very liberal can sometimes mean the same thing.ACTUAL CASE HISTORY: Alexa, 49, was Managing Director, Human Resources, for a large magazine publishing firm...

Bringing the 'New' into the 'Now'

05/22/2011 05:48pm
Theres a lot of buzz about resolutions. According to the Encarta Dictionary: English (North America), resolution is defined as a firm decision to do something. Notice what it doesnt say. It doesnt say a firm decision to change something, but to do something. Traditionally, most take the idea of a resolution to mean change. Without question, there are many things we should all change. Im certain, if given the opportunity, most of us could roll out the scroll of all the things we would like to change. Not necessarily a bad thing, but is resolution the best way to do it?...

Do I Have to Forget to Forgive?

05/22/2011 05:28pm
Amnesia is impossible. Now what? Hurt feelings happen. Pain is a fact of life. Get used to it. It's not going anywhere. Create a strategy for dealing with it right now and spare yourself years and years of needless pain. The good news is hurt feelings are not fatal. You don't have to die from your pain. Pain doesn't have to be a lifestyle. Contentment and happiness can be made in spite of it. The real question is, are you willing to do what it takes to have contentment and happiness anyway? Maintaining a lasting relationship is impossible if you...

Why Ask Why?

05/22/2011 05:03pm
Does It Matter? In the great mental vacuum of psychobabble and matching talk shows, seems to be an endless string of people from failed relationships asking why. Why didnt I get my promised phone call? Why werent they where they said they were going to be? Why did they lie to me? Why did they cheat on me? Why, why, why, why!!! These pointless inquiries are usually followed by some mention of closure as if having closure somehow changes the end results. My question is why ask why? The fact is it makes no difference. Why people do what they do rarely...

Setting the Stage for a Potential Client

05/20/2011 05:11pm
All of us have been through the typical interview. You know the kind, where you sit across a table or desk and have 1-4 people asking you questions. You answer them as best as you can..... this is what will decide whether you get the job or not.You don't really have the opportunity to ask any 'real' questions... in fact, it's probably somewhat frowned upon.Well guess what... that's the old "employee mindset" type of situation... not a "business/marketing mindset" kind of situation.Let's jump forward to the present. You're a Virtual Assistant. A Professional. People come to you because they need your...
